PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — An apartment fire in West Philadelphia drove a resident to an extreme exit on Thursday night.

Firefighters responding to a fire at a 19-story high-rise on Holden Street near Market saw a truly shocking sight  a man climbing down the outside of the building to escape the flames.

Video shows the real life Spider-Man using just his hands and feet to make his way down the balconies and railings of several floors until he got to the ground level. That's where he was met by a crowd of onlookers and firefighters anxious to lend a hand.

Authorities say the fire is believed to have been started by a trash compactor.

Several residents, including some young children, had to be rescued from the building.

Four residents and three police officers were taken to the hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.
