NORTHEAST PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — What began as a brief stop at a friend's house became an instant nightmare for a mother of young children.

Around 10:15 Wednesday night on Van Kirk Street in Lawncrest, police said a 28-year-old woman stopped at her friend’s house for a quick visit inside.

With her car engine still running, a man got in the car and drove off, not realizing he wasn't alone. The woman called the cops.

“She said her two children were in the back seat — ages 1 and 6," said Chief Inspector Scott Small. "So we made this job a priority.”

A police chopper tracked the car. Officials said they wanted to keep the kids safe so they avoided a chase on the streets.

The car then hit a curb, and police said they got to the driver, who seemed to be impaired — but there were no kids.

The man told officers he dropped them off on Darrah Street. Someone on that block saw the children and called 911.

The kids were checked out and not hurt. Police said the man will face kidnapping and auto theft charges.

The mother and her two children were reunited," Small added. "They’re all fine."
