PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A Philadelphia man accused of rape is in custody after police say he fatally struck a woman while fleeing from police.

Authorities say 36-year-old Raheem Geathers was sitting in a blue Audi at Sixth and Master streets on Tuesday when two cops from the Criminal Intelligence Unit approached him.

They say Geathers recognized one of them and immediately took off in his car, driving along the sidewalk and hitting a parked car and a woman who was walking.

He ran from the scene, police say, but officers eventually caught him.

The 63-year-old victim had severe injuries to her head and body, and when medics picked her up to take her to the hospital, officials say she died of a heart attack while on the way.

Geathers was arrested on homicide by vehicle and involuntary manslaughter charges, but charges for a sexual assault are still pending.
