PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A man wanted for sexual assault in the state of Vermont is now in the custody of the Upper Darby Police following a high-speed police chase that ended in a fiery crash.

The FBI issued a bulletin saying Everett Simpson had kidnapped a woman and her child, and had sexually assaulted the woman in a Vermont hotel room. He then fled.

Police chased Simpson through several jurisdictions into Delaware County.

Propsect Park police first came into contact with Simpson, through the use of a license plate reader on Sunday.

Simpson lost control of his car, crashed into a pole and fled on foot.

A while later, a woman reported seeing Simpson coming out of a sewer near the Primos Swim Club in Clifton Heights, Pa.

Simpson then stole a can from a woman unloading her groceries. She had left her phone in the car.

"Investigators were able to ping the phone," Upper Darby Police Superintendent Mike Chitwood said. "Ridley Township police then picked up the stolen car."

Police caught up with Simpson outside of the Kohl's in Springfield Township.

Simpson was taken to Crozer-Keystone Health System in Chester for evaluation. Police claim he was faking injury.

He faces numerous felony charges across at least three states.
