PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Get ready for congested roads over the next few days as people head out to celebrate the Memorial Day holiday weekend.

Jana Tidwell with AAA Mid-Atlantic says there will be a lot of people taking to the roads now through Monday.

"We'll see the second highest volume trailing only the year 2005," Tidwell said.

That's the second highest volume of traffic, she says, since AAA started tracking holiday travel volume in the year 2000.

"Ninety percent of all holiday weekend travelers will go by car. So that's going to translate locally to over 450,000 travelers on the roadways," she said.

She says if possible, plan your travel during off-peak times.

"What we will see beginning Thursday and into Friday is a mix of commuters and holiday weekend travelers and that is only a recipe for increased congestion and traffic delays," Tidwell said.

Why is this expected to be such a record-breaking travel weekend on the roads?

"AAA conducts an intention survey. Our analysts look at this information and most people are willing to travel because the economy has been so strong," Tidwell explained.
