PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) -- Mindfulness, meditation and self-care are popular buzzwords you're hearing, often from well-known leaders in industry and the arts. A West Philadelphia woman has created a guide to get you started.

"Mindfulness is the foundation for thriving," said wellness advocate Pax Tandon, the local author of a new book, "Mindfulness Matters: A Guide to Mastering Your Life."

"I really did write this book for everyone who is interested in finding more balance, joy, presence and bliss out of life," Tandon explained.

The book is divided into three sections: the mind, the body, and the soul. It offers real life practices, journaling exercises and gives readers hands-on tools to help them thrive.

"We've had a spate of suicides recently at the college level," Tandon said.

The CDC says suicide is the second-leading cause of death among people ages 15 to 34.

"I went to Penn. This is a huge issue for the university," Tandon said. "I'm very committed to this population reading this book, receiving its teaching, and starting to integrate them so that we build resilience in young minds and all minds.

"Mindfulness Matters: A Guide to Mastering Your Life" is available in stores and online now.
