MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Pa. (KYW Newsradio) — Authorities in Montgomery County say the first of two gun take-back events was a success. It’s called Operation Safe Homes, and the district attorney's office says 35 guns were handed in at police departments across the county on Wednesday.

DA Kevin Steele says there is no payment for the firearms, but they’ll collect anything from old hunting rifles to handguns that are no longer wanted.

"We found there were a lot of people saying, 'Hey, we've got young kids in the house and we want to try to get the weapons out of the house,'" he said.

Another gun collection is scheduled for Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at police departments in Abington, Lower Merion, Lower Salford, Pottstown, Upper Merion and Whitpain.
