PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — If you are looking for something different to do on New Year's Day, there's a national effort underway to get people off the couch and into nature.

It's called "First Day Hikes," and state parks across the nation are taking part in different ways. In Pennsylvania, guided tours are being offered at 29 state parks.

"Easy walks, and the cool thing about these, they're held by people within our state park system that really know the park," said Terry Brady, spokesman for the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.

Brady says the weather has been mild, and a first day hike may appeal to those who are averse to the cold and snow.

"You can ask questions about the park," he explained. "The leaders will make sure that people are cognizant of what's going on around them, what's growing, what's not growing and why, so it's a good learning experience, a good athletic experience and it's a nice way to start the new year."
