PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — It's the Semiquincentennial.

"The Secretary of Interior asked us to come up with a new name. He couldn't say it — semiquincentennial," said Frank Giordano, president of the Philly Pops.

In other words, it's the nation's 250th birthday ... in 2026. Giordano is also the new executive director of a commission created by Congress two years ago to plan a nationwide celebration.

"Much of it will be centered here in Philadelphia, and in the 13 colonies," Giordano said.

The festivities here could include the baseball All-Star Game. Giordano says the commission will also decide what — if any — permanent structures should be built for the party.

"Everything is on the table at this point," he said. "We have not had an official meeting of the commission yet!"

The commission doesn't have an office or a budget yet, but Giordano said that should come together in the coming weeks. The legislation requires the commission to meet at Independence Hall. Giordano said the first meeting will be Oct. 3.

"It seems that eight years is a long time," Giordano said. "It's not a very long time to plan a national celebration."

Besides fundraising and event planning, the commission will decide what to include in a time capsule to be opened on the nation's 500th birthday.
