PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Tens of thousands of products are hitting grocery store shelves with a special label that won't leave you squinting at the fine print.

We're used to seeing nutrition facts and ingredient information on product packaging, but what if you need to know more?

"Consumers want to know how the product is produced, what impact the production of that product has on the environment, their health or their family's health," explained National Consumers League Executive Director Sally Greenberg.

With Smart Label, Greenberg said you can find that information.

"Environmental consequences, GMOs, whether there's a kosher seal, whether there's allergens," she continued.

Smart Label works by scanning the QR code on the package with the free Smart Label mobile app, or by entering the brand and product on

The site scans food and personal care items. Until everything comes with a screen, Greenberg said it's the best way to learn what you want to know about what you're buying.

"More than seven in 10 shoppers want information beyond what the label can provide, and more than two-thirds of the consumers who were surveyed said their interest in information has increased over the past two years," she said. "So now is a very good time to be providing more robust information to consumers."
