PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) -- KYW Newsradio's annual student reporters program kicked off Saturday morning, in Center City.

"This is our 51st year for the newstudies program," said Newsroom Operations Coordinator, Dennis Edward.

"We teach them about broadcasting,” he explained. “We have KYW Newsradio reporters, anchors and managers here to teach the students."

Former director of programming and news, Steve Butler, explained how the curriculum has evolved over the years.

"All the students produce something that's going to end up on the radio,” he said. “Well, that technology has changed so much. Everybody is walking around with a great recording device which is their smartphone."

So what do students think of the program so far?

"One of the hardest things about high school is seeing how everything you do now plays into the future," said J.P. Infortuna, a junior from Conestoga High School. “This just really gives a good perspective and good hands on experience with a lot of great lectures."
