New fundraising effort asks diners to tip servers, school district
PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The nonprofit that raises money for the Philadelphia school district will soon be asking restaurant patrons to chip in for schools.
Tip your server, and while you're at it, would you like to leave a little for the School District?
Starting next weekend, diners at some Philadelphia restaurants will see that request.
"On your bill, they will ask you, 'Do you want to leave an additional tip for Philly Public Schools?'" said Donna Frisby-Greenwood, CEO of the Fund for the School District of Philadelphia.
She says customers five years ago contributed $50,000.
"In 2014, the district partnered with Stephen Starr restaurants and asked patrons to leave a tip. And it was very successful for the district, and we thought that we would reprise that," she said.
Starting Feb. 16, for one week, the Field House near the Reading Terminal Market will solicit tips for schools. In all, eight restaurants are taking part through the end of April, including Green Soul, Warmdaddy's, Rouge, and Audrey Claire.
In December, the fund asked Philadelphia property owners to give part of their tax abatements to schools, and 20 people responded, netting the fund nearly $21,000.
