WASHINGTON (KYW Newsradio) — Freshman New Jersey Rep. Andy Kim is just getting acclimated to life at the Capitol. One of his first orders of business is co-sponsoring a piece of gun legislation.

Kim has co-sponsored the bipartisan Background Checks Act of 2019, legislation that he says kept coming up over and over again on the campaign trail.

"This is a way for us to try and find bipartisan solutions to a problem that many of us understand is one of our top priorities," he said.

Republicans from Pennsylvania and New Jersey helped draft the legislation.

"This bill focused on the background checks, something that the vast majority of Americans — well over 90 percent — support," Kim added. "This is a way for us to close some of those dangerous loopholes — the gun show loopholes, the private sale loopholes."

Kim hopes to be part of a new Congress that gets things done and doesn't stall because of bickering.

There's no word yet on when the bill might be up for a vote.
