TRENTON, N.J. (KYW Newsradio) — New Jersey Transit has not exactly been held in high public esteem over the last few years.

Despite what locals may think, the agency made the Forbes 500 list of best places to work across America, coming in at No. 459.

(To put that in context, Amtrak came in at 279.)

Forbes Editor Frederick Allen said a private contractor emailed 30,000 people to compile that list.

"[NJ Transit] made the list by being a place that employees seem to like to work at," Allen said. "Maybe it's better to be on the inside at New Jersey Transit than to be a customer or a passenger."

Mind you, more than a few people were surprised NJ Transit received the distinction, given the rash of bad publicity in recent years.

Gov. Phil Murphy referred to the agency as a "national disgrace" thanks to poor operations and a lack of adequate funding — both issues he's begun to address since taking office in January.

The governor's office did not respond to a request for comment on this story, But NJ Transit did.

"It was a nice validation of the fact that this is an employee-focused agency," spokeswoman Elizabeth Chamberlain said, "and a good opportunity for us to remind people that we are actively hiring."

They're looking for bus drivers, in particular.

Chamberlain noted the agency offers generous benefits and tends to promote from within.
