PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The National Lacrosse League's Philadelphia Wings will open their second season Saturday night when they visit the Georgia Swarm.

Head coach and general manager Paul Day is excited to get the campaign started.

"We're feeling good," Day told KYW Newsradio. "We had a good offseason. The year before, we didn't have players until August and the expansion draft. So this year, right after the season exit interviews and we were able to work on some personal growth with our guys in the offseason."

And Day said their time leading up to this opener has been well spent.

"We've had a great training camp," he said.

In their expansion season, the Wings went 4-14 while allowing the most goals (246) in the league. Day expects improvement this season.

"We added six important parts to our team," he said. "We added two veteran goalies in Brandon Miller and Zach Higgins. Two defensemen, Ian Llord, who we won three championships with in Rochester. He actually started his career in Philly. Veteran guy who can come in and help us anchor the defense and really grow with the young guys. Nick Finlay is only 24, won a championship in Saskatoon. Then up front we added Cory Vitarelli, another veteran, very physical guy and Brett Hickey, who was with us last year, but missed the majority of the season with injury."

The Swarm opened their season on Nov. 30 with an impressive 14-4 win in Rochester over the Knighthawks.

"They're one of the best teams in the league," Day said. "Them and Buffalo in the East, Calgary and Saskatoon in the West. Those are the top teams, so it's going to be quite a test for us."

Last season, these two teams split their two meetings, each winning on the road.

Saturday night's game in Duluth, Georgia gets underway at 7:00 p.m.
