PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Be prepared for slow traffic this week if you're traveling on the Northeast Extension of the Pennsylvania Turnpike.

Work crews have converged on the northbound side of the Lehigh Tunnel on I-476 for routine maintenance, and will remain onsite from Tuesday through Thursday to make sure it's safe for all those vehicles on that stretch of road.

Kathleen Walter, a spokeswoman for the Pennsylvania Turnpike, said the northbound tunnel will be closed to traffic from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

"It's daytime, single-lane patterns, and that will be in the southbound tunnel, while the northbound tunnel is closed for routine maintenance that our turnpike crews will be doing this week," she said.

Walter noted this is done every year about this time.

"Summer's winding down, it's not too heavily traveled during those times, and we have the ability to put motorists into single lane pattern in the opposite tunnel," she said.

When work is complete in the northbound tunnel, crews will make plans to shut down the southbound side.
