PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — About a week ahead of Israeli Independence Day, the original exhibition copy of America's recognition of the state of Israel is on sale by the Raab Collection in Ardmore.

Nathan Raab of the Raab Collection says the document, on sale for $300,000 is the only known signed copy of America's 1948 recognition of Israel's statehood.

"The person who got it was the head of the Israeli American Pavilion at the World's Fair in 1964 and 1965 and mentioned to Truman on a visit that there was no final, signed document recognizing Israel from the United States and that there was in fact just this press release," Raab said. "Truman went into the archives of the Truman Library, found the press release, had a copy made by a process called a photostat - we no longer do that - and then he signed that photostat."

And Raab says the timing of the sale is coincidental, with Israeli Independence Day taking place next week.

"I hope that it serves as a reminder of the importance of the relationship between the two countries," he said.
