PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A group of women in pink boots spent their International Women's Day making beer at a brewery in the Callowhill section of Philadelphia.

Prominent women from the Philadelphia beer scene spent the day brewing "Smash It Up Saison" at Love City Brewing.

"The saison is going to be dry hopped. So we are actually going to add hops in fermentation, which is not typical for a saison. Usually all the hops are added in boil, but we are adding the hops in fermentation to kick it up a notch," said Melissa Walter, co-founder of Love City Brewing.

The local chapter of the Pink Boots Society participated.

"We're an international organization of women who are professional beer industry women. We range from owners to sales reps to bartenders to brewers to lab technicians, and part of our mission is networking," said Erin Wallace, the president of the Philadelphia chapter. "But our biggest thing is sharing the knowledge, what we have with other women in the industry. We host a lot of symposiums and conferences, and then we fundraiser for scholarships for our members."

Carly Chelder, a past recipient of a scholarship, is opening her own brew pub in Ambler in one week.

"I could not have done this without the support of Pink Boots Society - this great organization for women in brewing in this traditionally male dominated industry. Between not only the brewing experience, the business education I got from this scholarship is really what is making Tannery Run succeed," Chelder said.
