PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The Education Nominating Panel voted unanimously to send the mayor 27 candidates — from which he'll pick nine — to serve on the Philadelphia School Board.

The names include those of academics, professors, business people and current board members.

Panel chair and Penn Provost Wendell Pritchett said after 50 candidates were ranked and 20 were interviewed in executive session, the panel narrowed it down to 27.

“We were looking for passion for education. We were looking for lots of different kinds of capabilities. We were looking for a clear expressed interest in being engaged with the Philadelphia public schools. And, we certainly were looking for an educational background,” she said.

Eight of the current nine board members are also among the 27 nominees. Board Vice President Wayne Walker asked that he not be nominated again.

The names were made public at a City Hall meeting after it adjourned, but retired teacher and education activist Lisa Haver argued the panel was violating the Sunshine Act by not deliberating the names in public.

“The people of Philadelphia, including the stakeholders of this district, have been shut out of this entire process,” she said. “This nominating politburo has violated the law by holding secret meetings.”

Pritchett maintained the process was legal. But with no public discussion, the 27 names received unanimous votes.

From that list, the mayor will select nine names for four-year terms, and then send the list to City Council for approval.
