PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The Philadelphia Archdiocese is closing three churches next month that were previously involved in parish mergers.

Archbishop Charles Chaput approved the closing of the Our Lady of Holy Souls church building in North Philadelphia, the St. Stanislaus Kostka church building in Coatesville, and Saint Leo church in the Tacony section of Philadelphia on Jan.  7.

The closings were announced during weekend Masses.

Holy Souls was merged with Holy Child parish in 1993 and Our Lady of Hope parish was created.

St. Stanislaus merged with St. Joseph Parish in 2012 and the new parish retained the St. Joseph name.

St. Leo merged with Our Lady of Consolation in Northeast Philadelphia in 2013 with operations moved to Our Lady of Consolation.

The archdiocese says the expense of maintaining the parish buildings played a major role in the decision to close them.
