PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A local sports team is looking to bring the city another championship, but for a nontraditional sport that is catching on like wild fire.

Last year, electronic sports, or competitive gaming, grossed nearly $700 million.

"This year is close to $1 billion in esports revenue," said Rob Hilsky, co-owner of N3rd Street Gamers, a company that runs esports competitions. "We're America's premier amateur sports pipeline."

Comcast Spectacor recently invested in N3rd. Hilsky said this relationship shows a glimpse of how much esports have grown over the last few years.

"Teams now have sports psychologists helping them, nutritionists and fitness instructors," he added, and they're also working with local team the Philadelphia Fusion.

The city's esports team is currently competing in The Overwatch League playoffs — a global esports league with city-based teams — where they play "Overwatch," a first-person shooter game.

"There are certain events that they throw where we'll come and we'll just support that event," he said.

For the next three weeks, N3rd is a running a camp teaching kids positive mental and physical lifestyles through gaming.

"Most importantly, we promote positive teamwork and attitude toward gaming," he added.
