PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A free STEM workshop in Hunting Park on Saturday is geared towards helping students learn more about opportunities in the field.

"I am really hoping to demystify what STEM is," said Isobel Dewey, director of STEM at Simon Gratz Mastery Charter High School.

She says aside knowing that STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math, "I really want participants to walk away knowing this is what it looks like to be participating in STEM while I'm at school; these are the jobs that I could have available to me."

But she says the program is not just about looking at how STEM subjects can be beneficial down the road.

"Also, this is really how I'm already engaging in STEM in my everyday life. I think beyond just the subjects, STEM is really a way of thinking and a way of engaging with the world and that's what I'm hoping that people walk away with," Dewey said.

Dewey says from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., professionals and students will be available to talk about how STEM concepts are integrated into their work or studies.

"We'll also have some hands-on demos, so students will have the opportunity to learn the science behind slime, along with how to build some simple circuits, and they'll be able to see a 3D printer in action," Dewey added.

The event takes place in the gym of Simon Gratz Mastery Charter High School and is free to all.
