PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney's father has died.

He was 83 and had been in failing health recently, though the mayor's office says his death was sudden.

James Kenney was a firefighter in the Philadelphia Fire Department for 20 years. He often took on additional jobs to put the mayor and his three siblings through Catholic schools.

The mayor keeps his public and personal life strictly separated, but his father's influence was evident in his affection for the fire department.

In his inauguration, three years ago, the mayor said his father "worked for all of Philadelphia's families and that meant that, sometimes, he was even going to be required to put other families' before our own."

"When you're a child," he said, "that kind of sacrifice seems normal but looking back, I see how extraordinary the sacrifice was that both my parents made."

James is survived by his wife, Barbara.

The statement from the mayor's office asks for privacy.

The mayor will have no public appearances for the rest of the week.

The mayor released the following statement on Thursday, Dec. 6.
