PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) -- Spring Garden Elementary School was the site of some very excited children who learned they'd be receiving free winter gear.

When 8-year-old Taylor Johnson learned she'd be getting a hat, gloves and scarf for free, the first person she thought about was her mother.

"She pays for a lot of stuff for our house," Johnson said, "and then sometimes she can't pay for other stuff."

Eight-year-old Tyler Anderson knows winter in Philadelphia can be tough.

"It's gonna turn us into icicles," he said. "We're gonna be really cold, so we would like to have hats and gloves and scarves for us to be warm!"

The winter accessories were donated to the school students by The Links, Incorporated.

"We learned of Spring Garden Elementary School through the School District of Philadelphia," said Leah Shephard, vice president of the Philadelphia chapter of the nonprofit organization.. "We thought that they had some of the brightest, best elementary kids in the city. Some of their students are in need of basic necessities for winter."

Shephard's organization also made a contribution to the school that would allow the principal to buy books for at least 50 students.
