PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — They are the first voice you hear when dialing 911.

Commissioner Richard Ross said the men and women of the radio room are an officer's best friend.

"Just the patience and tenacity they show each and every day that often goes unheralded, they deserve all the credit they can get," said Ross.

So rather than award the top radio dispatchers like usual, the Philadelphia Police Department is recognizing the entire battalion.

Ross said dispatchers are special because they often help people who are having the worst day of their lives.

Veteran dispatcher Caneshia Bailey is happy the entire team is being praised.

"I've been an employee for 19 years, and I do my job well. So does a lot of other dispatchers. I'm glad that we're all being recognized," she said.
