Philadelphia School District renews marketing deal to attract new teachers

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) -- The School District of Philadelphia is re-upping a marketing deal to recruit new teachers.  

The School Reform Commission last year hired Magnum Integrated Marketing for $490,000 to advertise for new teachers. At a meeting on Thursday, the new school board approved renewing the deal for another year at $400,000.  

Robin Lowry, a physical education teacher at Edison High School, questioned the expense.
     
"I don't understand why you have to spend $400,000 to recruit teachers when we have college programs in the area," Lowry said. "And shouldn't students in those programs at Temple know to apply to the district?"
     
A board committee considered delaying the vote until February, but Superintendent William Hite says a lot of early recruiting work has already been planned.
    
"The important planned activities with Magnum from now through February are: the deployment of digital advertising, search and keyword advertising and paid social media," Hite said. "Delaying any action on this agenda item would jeopardize our ability to do this important work."
     
Hite urged approval of the deal, and the board voted without objection to do so.
