PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Bloom Philly contest winners were announced Thursday at the Pennsylvania Convention Center.

Jonathan Rivard was the emcee for the announcement, which happens annually just ahead of the Philadelphia Flower Show.

"They have a contest asking local businesses to dress up their windows with the theme from the flower show," Rivard said. “The judging is done by PHS, and what they’re really looking for in the categories is color, the use of flowers, and then really bringing the theme of the flower show to life."

This year’s theme is Flower Power.

Among the participating business owners was Carolyn Zinni, owner of Carolyn Zinni Bridal on East Passyunk Avenue.

“I created a six-foot ankh, and then I drilled nearly 2,000 holes it in, and then we placed flower buds into this to create it," she said. "And then my mannequins were dressed in '70s clothing. We had bell-bottoms. And I had a Jimi Hendrix guitar in the window."

Ariel Sims of P.J. Clark’s at the Curtis Building decorated her restaurant to look like the cover of the Beatles album "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band."

"We bought four mannequins, and we put the outfits that appear on the cover of the album in the middle, and then we surrounded it with a large flower display. Many of the flowers were made by Donna and her art class at The St. Mary’s School, which are our neighbors.”

Sims was one of 19 business owners who won awards for their window displays.

"To be recognized in this very fun, kind of outside-of-the-box, way really feels that we’re part of our community and our community really is seeing that so that feels great," she said.

The Flower Show opens at the Convention Center on Saturday.
