PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) --  Thousands gathered at Smith Memorial Playground & Playhouse Saturday for the opening of Play-A-Palooza.

"We're on six and a half acres, so we can take a lot of people," said executive director Frances Hoover.

Among the many visitors were Brittney DeShields and her four children.

"I haven't been here since I was a little kid,” she said with excitement. "I feel like a child again!"

Parent Leslie Masado says what she loves about Smith is the variety of structure on which to play.

"I don't even know the name of any of these rides, but there's a thing that spins around -- a climbing merry-go-round, a climbing-go-round,” Masado says, “you can climb up on top of and there are lots of swings. There's an area for smaller children and obviously at the very top of the list is the big wooden slide."

Hoover agrees the century-old Ann Newman Giant Wooden Slide is the playground's most popular attraction.

"It's all waxed up and we give everybody a burlap bag and they slide down real quickly, and it's a wonderful feeling for children and adults as well," she adds.
