PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — If you walk into The Jacks New Years Brigade clubhouse in South Philly and say "Play Gloria!" someone is going to play the song made popular by '80s pop star Laura Branigan for you.

You know the one.

The song did, after all, help them big leading up to this year's Mummer's Parade.

"We kind of rolled with it up until the New Year's parade. It was kind of like our hype song," co-captain Nick Foschini told KYW Newsradio. "We were the winners in the Comic Division. We came in first place."

Fast-forward a week later to that Eagles-Bears "double doink" playoff game, which crowds gathered to watch at Jack's.

"The game was getting pretty intense," Foschini said. "We had a live DJ. At the commercial breaks, or when the Eagles score a touchdown or kick a field goal, we just start 'play Gloria!' or 'put Gloria back on!'"

The song played on the juke box over and over that night — the excitement from New Year's Day no doubt still in the air.

A handful of St. Louis Blues hockey players who were special guests at the members-only clubhouse that night got a kick out of all of this.

"They played the Flyers the next night," Foschini exlpained. "They end up beating [the Flyers> 3-0, and after the game they went in the locker room and went 'play Gloria!' and they took to it."

"Gloria" became the Blues' celebration song after that. They went from last place to the hottest team in the NHL. The Blues are currently playing in the Western Conference Finals.

"I think it brought them some relaxation in the locker room," Foschini said when asked if Gloria is really the reason the Blues turned their season around. "When you've got a good locker room and everyone's relaxed, obviously you're going to play better instead of being tense."

If you look around Jack's clubhouse, the walls are decked out in signs that say "Let's Go Blues" and "Bleed Blue," not to mention the Play Gloria! shirts Jack's is now selling.

"We're riding it out and having fun with it," added Foschini. "It's bringing a lot of people together, which is always a good thing, and we're rooting them on."

But, Foschini said, it's still the Flyers — and all the other Philly sports teams — first at Jack's.

Unfortunately, they don't have a song at the moment to turn the Flyers' struggles around.
