HAVERTOWN, Pa. (KYW Newsradio) -- It was a tragic scene in Delaware County Saturday after a toddler was struck and killed by car in the parking lot of the Havertown YMCA.

President and CEO of the Philadelphia Freedom Valley YMCA Shaun Elliott oversees around two dozen locations, including the Haverford Area YMCA along Eagle Road.

"There was a tragic accident in our parking lot," he explains. "A young girl was struck by a driver. Our staff responded -- they did an admirable job. Police were quickly on site along with emergency responders."

Sadly they weren't able to save the 27-month-old girl. Haverford Township Deputy Police Chief Joseph Hagan says the girl got away from her mother and sat down in a parking spot just as a driver was pulling into that space.

"(The driver) never observed the child there," Hagan said. "The mother was trying to wave the car to stop. At that point, he had pulled through to the parking spot and discovered he had struck the child."

Police say the driver was distraught after this happened, and no charges have been filed.
