PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Philadelphia police say an attempted home invasion in Tacony early Monday morning ended with one suspect being fatally shot and another wounded.

Around 4:20 a.m., two masked gunmen broke into a house on the 7100 block of Walker Street, near Wellington Street. They climbed through a back-deck window in an attempt to commit a robbery.

"The gunmen went upstairs and entered the bedroom of one of the witnesses, a 9-year-old boy, and took a cellphone from him," said Homicide Capt. Jason Smith. "He then moved on to another bedroom, occupied by a (33-year-old) female witness, held a gun to her head, and demanded money."

However, the gunmen were quickly met by bullets, as the woman's boyfriend began to fire at the pair.

"He either arrived at that location and came in and interrupted the robbery, or he was down in the basement, but he was certainly not discovered by the robbers when he made entry," said Smith.

Police say one suspect, a 23-year-old unnamed man, was shot in the chest, and he jumped out of a second-floor window to escape gunfire.

Smith said responding officers found him lying face-up on the driveway. He was taken to Jefferson Torresdale Hospital, where he died shortly thereafter.

The other suspect, later identified as 24-year-old Elvin Laureano-Ubiera, was shot in his left arm and taken to Nazareth Hospital. He is expected to be charged but remains in the hospital.

Police recovered five .40-caliber fire cartridge casings at the scene, as well as a pellet gun, which is believed to have been used by the offenders, Smith added.

Smith noted the woman's boyfriend appears to have acted in self-defense.

"It wouldn’t appear at this point in time that this individual would face the possibility of a murder charge," he said.

Detectives believe the incident may be connected to narcotics. They are investigating further.
