PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — An investigation is underway into the gruesome discovery of a body on fire in West Philadelphia early Friday morning.

Firefighters were called to the area of 44th and Ludlow street just before 1:30 a.m. for something burning in between two parked cars. Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small says emergency workers weren't expecting to find a body burning.

"She was burnt from head to toe — her entire body, where it's beyond recognition. We were able to determine only the fact that it's a female body," Small said.

Small says investigators aren't sure if the woman had any other injuries, but it's possible this could be a suicide. A lighter and a container full of what appears to be gasoline was found on a nearby dumpster.

Police are now reviewing surveillance video and talking to neighbors to try to piece together what happened.
