Police locate mother after baby girl is abandoned in Kensington

May 05, 2019 - 7:51 am

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Philadelphia police say they have located the mother of a baby girl who was abandoned Saturday morning in the Kensington section of the city.

According to police, at about 7:30 a.m. yesterday 35-year-old Desiree Frederick was along the 3100 block of E. Street when she asked a stranger to watch her baby girl.

After waiting for approximately 20 minutes the toddler's mother never returned, police say, and the stranger contacted authorities.

Police say the child has since been united with family members, and that Frederick is " currently speaking" with Philadelphia SVU investigators.

Officials say that it is "undetermined if any charges will be filed at this time," and that they wish to thank everyone for their assistance in this case.

Editor's note, May 6: On Monday, Police Captain Capt. Sekou Kinebrew confirmed that the mother is not accused of or charged with a crime. "And there's no reason to identify the child any further, because quite possibly, depending on how this investigation goes, the child may wind up being classified as a victim of a crime, that being endangering the welfare."
