PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) -- Police are warning women in South Philadelphia to be careful as they search for a suspected serial rapist. They say the man has been targeting victims for the last two months, including two attacks last night and early this morning.

Since at least December 20, authorities say a man, armed with a knife has been attacking women between midnight and 8 o’clock in the morning.

Special Victims Unit Captain Mark Burgmann says sometimes it starts with a brief conversation.

“Most of the time the women are approaching their apartment, or trying to enter their apartment, when he approaches them and forces them inside, and then either attempts to or does sexually assault them,” he said. “In one particular case he asked for a hug, and it led to a sexual assault.”

Burgmann says the assaults have happened on both sides of Broad Street - including Point Breeze, Graduate Hospital and Queen Village.

“We believe he is on a bike, several of the crimes he is observed on a bike,” he explains.

Burgmann describes the man to be about 5'7 - 5'8, with a beard or moustache and about 30 - 50 years of age.

The Philadelphia Police Department posted surveillance video and pictures of the man on there website PhillyPolice.com
