PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) The pandemic has wreaked havoc on many small businesses and companies throughout the region, but with public pools closed and summer plans canceled, pool sales are now on the rise.

“We've been in business for 35 years. This is probably one of the busiest seasons we've ever had. Sales are up probably 30% over our normal spring sales,” said Bob Holt with Aquavita Pools in Delaware County.

Holt said as summer approaches and people look for social distancing activities at home to keep them busy, getting a pool has skyrocketed to the top of the list.

“Right now, we cannot get above-ground pools. The latest acknowledgement we've had from factories is next September,” Holt said.

He added their company that also does pool maintenance is also getting alot of business on that end, and he's seeing an uptick in return customers.

“We have a larger number of people who have not opened their pools in a number of years, and they want to open them now,” he said.

The company has already opened more than 1,000 in-ground pools, with hundreds of families on weekly maintenance.

At Delaware Valley Pool Supply, John Lucey said their phones have been ringing off the hook, with people inquiring about pools and pool maintenance.

It may be early in the pool season, but he said social distancing is leading a lot of folks to kick things off sooner than usual, including buying more pool accessories.

“We're seeing a lot of inquiries about heaters, because the weather has not been cooperative, they want to get the pool water heated so they can open earlier,” he said.

With a lot of uncertainty over summer plans, Lucey said many families are turning to their home pools.

“There are a certain amount of people who did not open their pool for the last season or two, and this year they are,” he said.
