PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — It's a Philadelphia tradition. The 120th Mummers Parade takes place on New Year's Day, and the city along with the feathered ones themselves are putting some pep in their steps to get things done.

As the Christmas village comes down at Love Park, the bleachers along the parade route are going up around City Hall and along Broad Street.

The Mummers' clubs are polishing up routines, completing costumes, sets and props.

The Satin Slipper Fancy Brigade, about 80 strong, were working with a choreographer inside the Pennsylvania Convention Center. They'll perform two indoor shows and in between, they'll strut their stuff along Broad Street as well.

One of the performers, 33-year-old John Bielec, said it's a big family affair. "My family alone, my father, me, my son wears a suit," he listed, "a lot of brothers and sisters, uncles, cousins, girlfriends, wives."

The club has planned a Polynesian-themed performance. "We're all elements, so my element is wind," said Bielec. "I'll be one of these guys with capes."

Mike Townsend is the president of the club. He said there's still work to be done before showtime. "We still have some TLC obviously to do on the floats, decorate all around here," he said. "There is stuff going on at the club. Members are working on suits, working on hand props. Everybody pitches in and it all comes together."

Parking restrictions are in effect for Wednesday's Mummers Parade.

There are parking restrictions in place along the parade route, so be mindful of those in the days ahead. If your car is towed and relocated, officials ask that you don't call 911 to find out where it is. Contact the police district itself or the city's information center at 311.
