PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — It's not the fiscal gifts the American Red Cross is looking for.

The humanitarian organization is asking for blood donations on Giving Tuesday.

"We're at a point right now where we have less than a three-day supply of blood at hospitals and trauma centers in our region, and across the country," said Alana Mauger, communications manager for the American Red Cross Penn-Jersey Blood Services Region.

According to the Red Cross, lower than usual seasonal donations and a slew of natural disasters across the country have depleted their blood supply.

"And what we've really seen is that organizations are holding less blood drives than they have in the past, and we're really seeing less donors come out," she added.

From start to finish, Mauger said the whole process takes about an hour, but actually giving blood takes less than 10 minutes.

"Every donation has the potential to save up to three people," she added. "One hour of your time can save up to three people. That's a really heart warming thing to think about.

"And of course, we do give you goodies at the end."

As an incentive to donate, one of those goodies is a $5 Amazon gift card, which the Red Cross is giving out to donors until Dec. 17.
