PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A new report named Philadelphia one of the nation's big cities suffering from increased food insecurity.

Philadelphia has one of the highest big city poverty rates, says a new report by Hunger Free America and similarly, the city's hunger rates have been soaring from 2012 to the present.

"There has been a 22 percent increase over the past six years," Hunger Free America CEO Joel Berg said, all while the rest of the nation's rates have been dipping.

That's because the problem is systemic, he says.

"It's a failure of our entire political system. The federal government, state government and the city of Philadelphia," he said. "There aren't enough jobs, they don't pay high enough wages and the safety net is just inadequate."

Berg added that once again, Philadelphia must take the lead.

"Philadelphia led the nation in fighting for freedom, and now it has to step up to leading the nation in fighting for food for all," he said.
