PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) -- Researchers are turning to your morning cup of joe to treat two incurable brain disorders.

Parkinson's disease and Lewy body dementia get worse as proteins build up in the brain.

It's been known for a while that coffee offers some protection, but Dr. Maral Mouradian, a professor of neurology at Rutgers University says it's not the caffeine alone that helps.

She says another compound in the brew, EHT is also necessary.

"We put together small doses of each of these two compounds, when we put them together they sort of boosted each other's effects and resulted in a significant improvement in the behavior and brain pathology of laboratory mice."

Mouradian says the next step is to test it on people and if it works, use the combination to prevent or slow the devastating progression of these disorders.
