CAMDEN, N.J. (KYW Newsradio) — Camden County plans to relocate its social services headquarters from Camden to Stratford.

The current headquarters in what used to be an old Lit’s Department Store just won’t do anymore.

Freeholders considered another Camden site but opted for a long vacant Bradlee’s Department Store along Route 30, a short walk from the end of the PATCO high speed line.

"The Board of Social Services is four floors. Their Bradlee’s is not. It’s a flat area,” County Freeholder Carmen Rodriguez told KYW Newsradio “So what we’re going to basically do is gut the building completely and design it so that the Board of Social Services can streamline their operations.”

Another good thing about the Stratford site the free parking, which is unavailable where they are now.

"We estimate that it will take about 18 to 24 months to get the whole project completed,” Rodriguez added. “The costs are somewhere around $5.1 million, which is a whole lot less than what we had anticipated with the other site.”

About 500 staffers work in the Social Services agency and take care of about 800 people a day.
