BURLINGTON COUNTY, N.J. (KYW Newsradio) — A South Jersey woman will spend time behind bars for accidentally killing her infant son four years ago.

It's four years in state prison for a 39-year-old Delran mother who accidentally smothered her infant son after a drinking binge that lasted several hours, according to investigators.

Melissa Johnson took a plea deal from the Burlington County Prosecutor's Office. Under the agreement, she pleaded guilty to second-degree endangering the welfare of a child in exchange for the sentence.

Investigators say paramedics went to Johnson's home in 2015 to respond to a report of an unresponsive child. It was a relative that found Johnson on her couch asleep, partially on top of her three-month-old son.

Prosecutor Scott Coffina issued a statement, calling it a "heartbreaking and tragic occurrence for everyone involved."
