HARRISBURG, Pa. (KYW Newsradio) — The speaker of the Pennsylvania House has scheduled a news conference Thursday amid speculation that he may be stepping down from his influential post.

Allegheny County Republican Mike Turzai has served in the state House since 2001, and has wielded the speaker’s gavel since 2015.

Speculation about Turzai’s future plans dominated chatter around the Capitol this week, and as he left the Capitol building after presiding over the House Wednesday afternoon, Turzai declined to answer questions about whether he would discuss those plans at a scheduled news conference.

The Associated Press, citing three people who had conversations with Turzai and spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity, reports that Turzai is considering an offer from the private sector that would result in him leaving office or not running for re-election.
