PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) -- One of the nation's most audacious, hedonistic and politically incorrect radio promotions has come to an end.  After 26 years, Wing Bowl is no more.

It all started because there was little hope among Philly sports fans that the Eagles would ever win the Super Bowl. So, in 1993, Sportsradio WIP host Al Morganti created a chicken wing eating contest on the Friday before the NFL Championship dubbed "Wing Bowl."

The event grew from a small stunt in a hotel lobby, to one that repeatedly sold out the Wells Fargo Center, featuring huge prizes and scantily-clad Wingettes. Morganti says now, it's over.

"There was nowhere to turn after the Eagles won the Super Bowl," Morganti said. "I mean, that was the whole reason!"

Host Angelo Cataldi says something will replace Wing Bowl, but it won't be the same.

"C'mon. 20,000 people in an arena watching fat guys eat chicken wings," he said. "It's not going to happen twice."

And he's glad of one thing.

"The great thing is, we can say we had 26 Wing Bowls and nobody died," Cataldi said.

Except, maybe, a little piece of the fabric of Philadelphia.
