PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The Division II West Chester Golden Rams wrapped up their spring workouts on Saturday with their annual spring game, which saw the Purple beat the Gold, 20-14.

"I liked what I saw of us in the spring," West Chester head coach Bill Zwaan said. "We graduated a pretty good group of kids from a good football team last year, so my first concern was how we were going to replace those guys. I knew we had good guys sitting behind them, but a lot of those guys did a nice job this spring for us. So I'm optimistic as to what they're going to do in the fall."

West Chester went 10-1 in 2018, winning the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference title before falling in the first round of the NCAA Playoffs.

When it comes to the 2019 roster, Zwaan says the position with the most question marks coming into the spring on offense was the offensive line.

"We graduated three guys who basically started," he said. "So that means we return two who started the whole season. We had Pat Ferry (who got injured in the spring game), was an alternating starter, so he played a bunch. So we really feel like we had three guys who had experience, but we had to find those other two guys. We're still kind of up in the air as to who those two guys are going to be, but we had a couple of guys step up and show a little bit for us. So we think we're getting closer to filling that gap."

On defense, Zwaan says the spring was big for the defensive backs coming back.

"We graduated three starters in the secondary and then we had one out with an injury," he said. "So a lot of juggling going on in the secondary. We're starting to come closer to that. I think now we're maybe one guy away from feeling pretty good about everything. So we may end up looking at a freshman coming in to play in the secondary for us."

West Chester will open its 2019 season at home on Sept. 7 against Bentley University.
