PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The 81st annual Dad Vail Regatta kicked off Friday morning.

Rowing teams from more than 100 colleges across America and Canada are taking part in this year's regatta, a tradition on the Schuylkill River.

Mayor Jim Kenney said he's proud the city can lay claim to the largest collegiate regatta each and every year.

"It's an iconic institution and tradition in our city. Our river has been the site for wonderful competition amongst national and international rowers, and it's just a great thing," he said. "We needed to keep the river clear and dredge to have this continue."

The mayor said an agreement has been reached to dredge the Schuylkill River this summer so that the Dad Vail Regatta can continue to call Philadelphia home for many years to come.
