OCEAN CITY, N.J. (KYW Newsradio) — Memorial day weekend began Friday with a breathtaking sunrise that turned the sky orange.

After that, the floodgates opened and the crowds started filling the boardwalk through the morning as summer unofficially begins.

Observing an annual tradition, Friday marked the "unlocking of the ocean," followed by the Business Persons Plunge, in which men and women run into the ocean wearing their business suits.

Elodie Witkowski made her first Jersey Shore trip of the season on Friday.

She said she comes down as often as she can. "Maybe three or four times a year," she said. "The beaches are beautiful. The people are wonderful. The boardwalk is fun."

It will be tough to find anyone on the boardwalk who knows Ocean City as well as John Kurtz.

"I've been coming here for 62 years, and absolutely love it here," he said. "It's our favorite town. Because it's well kept, it's quiet, relaxing. It's all about focusing on family."

Kurtz is in town for a family reunion, and they are going to the beach Friday. It's a good choice, because the weather is beautiful.

As the crowds grew throughout the day, we also met Dottie McCrosson, who lives in Ocean City all year.

She said after Memorial Day weekend, it gets a little more quiet in June.

"The crowds are here, but it's not crazy," she said. "The Fourth of July, it becomes Mardi Gras in Ocean City without the alcohol."

She admits it's always nice after Labor Day, when the crowds start to dwindle, but she always welcomes anyone who comes to the shore in the summer.
