PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Rocky is retiring.

Sylvester Stallone says it's time for him to hang up his gloves after 40 years of playing the boxer Balboa on the big screen.

Oddly this was the last photo taken during the day on CREED2 ...Believe it or not this is an untouched photo… How strange is this...

"I couldn't be happier because - as I step back, because my story has been told - there's a whole new world that's going to be opening up for the audience, for this generation," he said.

In an Instagram post, Stallone says it's been his "ultimate privilege" to have created and starred as the ultimate Philly underdog who defies all odds.

"Sadly all things must pass...and end," he wrote. "The most wonderful thing of all, is that Rocky will never die because he lives on in you."

He has been Rocky in five films, including "Creed 2" which is now in theatres.
