PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The Temple Owls are flying high as they prepare for their first road game on Saturday against the University of Buffalo.

Temple improved to 2-0 this past weekend with an impressive 20-17 win over the University of Maryland at the Linc. The Owls' defense was superb in the win, holding the explosive Maryland offense to just the 17 points and 340 total yards.

Temple head coach Rod Carey knows exactly what allowed that unit to have so much success against the Terrapins.

"The way they prepared," he told KYW Newsradio. "They had one great week of practice last week and that showed on Saturday to be quite frank."

That defensive effort of the Owls was spearheaded by key goal line stands as twice the Owls turned the Terrapins over on downs inside the five and Maryland's last possession ended on yet another turnover on downs, this time at the Temple 12.

Carey discussed their success turning Maryland away in close.

"Confidence is a beautiful thing," he said. "When you get out there after studying it and practicing it and then you're executing it and it's working, it just kind of flows and just goes. The guys certainly capitalized on that momentum at a bunch of key different spots."

This first road game of the season will see the Owls visiting a Buffalo team on Saturday that is 1-2.

After a win in their opener over Robert Morris, the Bulls have lost to Penn State (45-13), and then last week they fell at Liberty, 35-17.

Carey has a lot of familiarity with the Bulls from his years as the head coach of their Mid-American Conference rival Northern Illinois University.

"These guys are tough," he said. "I know what they are about and how they go about it. So we're going to have to button up and meet that intensity from the start."

Saturday's game in Buffalo gets underway at 3:30pm.
