PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Too many children suffer from peanut allergies, but there's actually a list of the top foods likely to cause life-threatening problems.

"The most common are the top eight, which we talk about a lot," said Megan Lewis, a nurse practitioner in the Division of Allergy and Immunology at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. "That includes milk, egg, wheat, soy, peanuts, tree nuts, fish and shellfish. Those are the culprits of most allergic reactions, but really it can be to any food."

The list is not in rank order.

She said a child can be severely allergic to a food or just sensitive to it. Fortunately, it's possible for a child to outgrow a food issue.

"When we look at quality-of-life rankings, children and families with food allergy rank poorer quality scores than children of other chronic diseases," she added. "They describe the feeling of constantly being on guard and having to read food labels."
