NEW HOPE, Pa. (KYW Newsradio) — It was a shoulder-to-shoulder standing room only crowd for New Hope’s annual gay pride parade.

Megan Ruhmel, vice president of the northeast Pride chapter described Saturday as, “So much color, so much energy, so much love.”

Mark Machiesky of Bucks County says he spent Saturday’s parade with his boyfriend Eric.

“This is a small town, but we have a big voice,” he said.

Reporter: “So what does this mean, holding hands with your boyfriend in the middle of Pride?”

“I have no words. I’m speechless. It’s overwhelming. It’s very hard to describe, I could almost cry. It’s that amazing,” he said.

Ruhmel says she was overwhelmed by the turnout.

“Yeah, there’s thousands of people here,” she said. “This is amazing, I love it!”

The weekend parade also had a small group of protestors attend.

“I want to thank them for attending the gay pride parade,”Ruhmel said.

Meanwhile, Karen Trumbo of Warrington, Pennsylvania says the reason she came out was to show support to the gay community.

“My sign says, ‘Free mom hugs!’ because everyone deserves to have a mom who loves them and supports them for who they are,” she said.

Reporter: “So if someone has a mom who doesn’t support them?”

“Then we stand in for them,” Trumbo said.
